How Client-Side ID Parsing Functions
A South African ID number encodes core biological and registry categories inside its first 12 characters. The 13th number serves as a self-verifying control digit evaluated via the Luhn algorithm.
Decoding Encoded Segments
Date of Birth (Digits 1–6): Formatted as YYMMDD. The first two digits represent the year, the next two represent the calendar month, and the following two specify the day.
Gender Sequence (Digits 7–10): A value range between 0000 and 4999 maps to female, while sequences between 5000 and 9999 map to male.
Citizenship Identifier (Digit 11): A value of 0 signifies natural-born citizenship, while 1 reflects non-citizen permanent resident status.
